technofascism

    • The right-wing turn in tech has a label. Gil Durán's book The Nerd Reich is a big step in its crystallization. I don't know if I have anything interesting to say about it. I can brag that I detected it early but since it is no longer early, who cares?
    • It's a minor point compared to the very real damage these assholes do, but I am personally saddened by how they have managed to make their shitty worldview synonymous with "technology" in the public mind, and even within the field itself to some extent. Fighting this is an ongoing political battle; it's a professional obligation to not let Elon Musk own the idea of technology.
    • These people vary in their ideological seriousness. Many don't have deep belief systems, just a bunch of shitty justifications for their own wealth and power. What they are good at is taking advantage of short-term trends, and they hopped on Trumpism like they hopped on cloud computing (eg). I'm writing on the eve of the 2026 midterms which is likely to be the point where Trumpism explicitly goes into the gold-plated ashcan of history, and I expect they billionaires will find other some trend to get behind, hopefully one less harmful.
    • Trump failed to bring about their vision of a society fully under their control, as could have been easily forseen (Trump does nothing enrich himself while destroying things). Maybe they will decide the whole right-wing schtick was a bad investment and go onto something else.
    • Billionaires

      • Palmer Luckey
      • Balanji Srinivasan (promoter of The Network State, a key organizing vision)
    • "Thinkers"

      • I have a special relationship with those two; I was having arguments with them online when they were just obscure internet cranks, way before they became famous and influential. Don't think there's a causal connection but maybe I should stop before I create more monsters.
